Apply to Cal-Neva AFS's grants!

1) Semi-Annual Travel Grant – APPLICATIONS DUE FRIDAY, JUNE 26TH

  • Cal-Neva AFS will provide funding of up to $750.00 to 2 deserving students or early career professionals to support their attendance at the 2026 American Fisheries Society Meeting in Columbus, OH. You can learn more about this meeting here.
  • Any Cal-Neva AFS member who is active in fisheries, environmental sciences and management, or related aquatic disciplines is eligible to apply. Selection is based on academic qualifications, professional service, and reasons for attending the event. Preference will be given to 1) Cal-Neva AFS members in good standing, 2) applicants who are attending the conference to present their research or to attend trainings essential to their development, 3) applicants who demonstrate financial need, and 4) applicants who have not previously been awarded a Cal-Neva AFS Semi-Annual Travel Grant. If you are unsure if you are a member of Cal-Neva AFS, you may check using the fisheries.org Member Portal or by contacting the AFS Membership Coordinator (membership@fisheries.org).

  • All awardees must submit an article to the AFS newsletter Pisces summarizing the event. This article should be sumitted no later than 1 month after the event.

  • There are two parts to the application. Both parts 1 and 2 are due Friday, June 26th at 5 PM PST. Completed applications should be emailed to mateadjokic@gmail.com 

    • Part 1 – to be completed by the applicant

    • Part 2 – to be completed by the applicant’s academic advisor or employer

2) Small Grants Program –  APPLICATIONS OPEN MONDAY, JUNE 29TH AND DUE MONDAY, AUGUST 3RD

  • Cal-Neva AFS will provide funding for at least 2 fisheries-related projects in California or Nevada, totaling $3,000.
  • Preference will be given to those who have not previously received a Cal-Neva AFS Small Grant Award. Additionally, preference will be given to projects that further the mission of Cal-Neva AFS:
    • To improve the conservation and sustainability of fisheries resources and aquatic ecosystems by advancing fisheries and aquatic science and promoting the development of fisheries professionals
    • To coordinate member activities related to information exchange, outreach, and aquatic stewardship
  • Applications will be reviewed by Cal-Neva AFS officers, the Grants Coordinator, and one volunteer from the Cal-Neva AFS Executive Committee.
  • If a proposal is submitted by an invidual, the individual must be a Cal-Neva AFS member. If the application is submitted by a group, a majorirty of individuals in the group must be Cal-Neva AFS members. If you are unsure if you are a member of Cal-Neva AFS, you may check your participation through the fisheries.org Member Portal or reach out to the AFS Membership Coordinator (membership@fisheries.org).
  • Applications must use 1-inch page margins, 11-point font, and must not be longer than 2 pages. The application must be emailed to mateadjokic@gmail.com on or before Monday, August 3rd. The following information must be included:
    • Project Title
    • Name of AFS member or subunit seeking funding
    • Applicant’s AFS Member Number
    • Applicant’s contact information (position, address, phone number, and email address)
    • Co-Applicant information (if applicable)
    • Project description – Please describe how the project further’s Cal-Neva’s AFS mission
    • Total estimated project cost and amount of funding provided by other entities (specify any other funding sources)
    • If selected, how would the funds be used?
    • Will this funding allow for completion of the project or will you still need additional funds?
    • General project timeline, included estimated time to completion
    • Do you have the permits required to complete this work?
  • The following criteria will be used by the reviewers when scoring the applications:
    • Does the proposal promote Cal-Neva AFS’s mission?
    • Does the proposal incorporate and promote science-based management, conservation, or understanding of fisheries resources?
    • Does the proposal elevatethe visibility of fisheries to a broad audience?
    • Does the proposal need this grant to complete the project?
    • Are there additional benefits to Cal-Neva AFS?
    • Does the proposal have the required permits to complete the work?
    • Did the application follow instructions?

PLEASE NOTE: This program will not fund projects that are mandated through regulatory actions.

3) Annual Travel Grant – APPLICATIONS OPEN SOON

  • Cal-Neva AFS will provide funding of up to $500.00 to 2 deserving students or early career professionals to support their attendance at Cal-Neva AFS conferences, workshops, and meetings.
  • Preference will be given to 1) Cal-Neva AFS members in good standing, 2) students or early career professionals (5 or fewer years in the profession) who are attending the conference to present their research or to attend trainings essential to their development, 3) applicants who demonstrate financial need, and 4) applicants who have not previously been awarded a Cal-Neva AFS Annual Travel Grant. If you are unsure if you are a member of Cal-Neva AFS, you may check by using the fisheries.org Member Portal or by contacting the AFS Membership Coordinator (membership@fisheries.org).

4) Requests for Donations from CAL-NEVA AFS

  • Cal-Neva AFS may donate funds toward special projects and special events that align with the chapter’s mission. This can include meetings, workshops, and/or projects. All requests for sponsorships and/or donations must be approved by the Cal-Neva AFS Executive Committee prior to being awarded. We recommend that requests be submitted at least 2 months prior to the event to allow adequate time for approval and dispersal of funds.
